History

Birth of Technocentre ICT

In the late 2000s, the MRC du Rocher-Percé wanted to invest in sectors where the MRC could stand out and saw the information and communications technology (ICT) sector as promising. The infrastructure built in Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine, in terms of bandwidth capabilities, was now facilitating the circulation of information. In order to support the development of this sector, a team was set up. In 2009, it gave birth to the Technocentre ICT in Chandler. Rapidly, the Technocentre shone within the community, contributing to the promotion of ICTs and implementing training programs in collaboration with knowledge institutions.

Towards a regional organization

As ICT belong to a growing sector experiencing a worrying shortage of manpower in Quebec, the Technocentre quickly chose to expand its position in covering not only the MRC du Rocher-Percé, but the entire region of Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine. The Technocentre ICT thus made the bet that with its high unemployment rate and low employee turnover rate, the region was well positioned to meet the ICT sector labour needs.

Digital Strategy GÎM

In june 2016, the Table des préfets des MRC designated Technocentre ICT as the organization responsible for developing and implementing the Digital Strategy of Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine.

The Strategy carries a vision of a region “where every citizen, business and organization has access to information technologies and use them to their full potential in order to enhance the population’s well-being, facilitate innovation and a dynamic occupation of the territory.” Three  areas of improvement are aimed at: Infrastructures, Digital economy and Popular education.

The Technocentre ICT has become a prime partner in the development of the ICT sector. Furthermore, since technologies are now increasingly present in every field of activity, the Technocentre is bound to fulfill a vital task in the general socioeconomic development of Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine.
